How our world has changed since March 8

Hello all,

Oh my, how our world has changed since I last visited Nazareth March 8! The amount of change we have experienced – and created – was unimaginable then. The lives of people around the world have been upended. And amidst this upheaval, the Nazareth community is courageously rallying together around our important mission, ensuring continuity of student learning, support, growth and success. I am deeply inspired by and grateful for your commitment, ingenuity and accomplishment.

Every day, I learn more about the ways in which the people who are the Nazareth community are making a positive difference - creating new pedagogies; innovating experiential learning; grappling with living our values of community and belonging; partnering with community agencies to address unprecedented challenges; supporting our students’ mental health; imagining new approaches to recruiting new students; inventing new campus sanitation, health and safety methods and practices – I could go on and on. I can clearly see Nazareth’s values in action. We will undoubtedly look back on this time with awe!

I am grateful for the dedicated leadership of President Braveman and the senior team during this extraordinary time. We have been in regular conversation, and I am enjoying learning from their wisdom, experience and expertise. Our shared commitment to a smooth presidential transition is even more important during such a dynamic time. I am with you all – albeit virtually for now – and very excited about joining with you this summer to continue to move Nazareth forward.

We are all working to find our bearings amidst so many unknowns. And we are all beset with emotions and concerns about the challenges that lie ahead. What we know for sure is the enduring imperative of Nazareth’s mission and contributions to our world. And our overarching focus must be on ensuring that Nazareth emerges from this unprecedented time stronger than ever.

To this aim, we have to work on several different planes and time horizons at once – we need to continue to adapt day by day to the evolving pandemic situation, we need to be as prepared as possible for an array of possible scenarios as we look toward fall, and we need to look ahead to maximize the good we can create from this sea change. Our work on all planes must emphasize what makes a Nazareth education compelling.

The pandemic has changed so much about the ways in which we live our lives. There is much learning we can take from this that will impact how we choose to live in the future.

For now, I send my very best wishes to all, as we finish this topsy-turvy semester. I look forward to being in touch again as the semester winds up so we can begin to think forward together.

Best wishes,

Beth Paul
